MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 19, 2009 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Magic career for young opera veteran with angelic voice SHIREEN KHALIL Ashfield opera singer Cameron Woodhouse. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~pP245369 BY the time it's over Cameron Woodhouse will have appeared in 17 productions of Opera Aust- ralia's The Magic Flute -- a great achievement for a boy of only 13 years. The Ashfield opera singer, who is a member of St Andrews Ca- thedral Choir, auditioned for Mozart's The Magic Flute in September last year and was chosen to play the role of Third Boy. He described it as one of the greatest experiences he has ever had. ''This is the first opera I've done and it's just amazing,'' Cameron said. ''I didn't think I'd have the opportunity to do it or get into something like this and working with amazing people like Andrew Goodwin.'' Cameron's first performance was at the tender age of six with Strathfield Musical Societies pro- duction of Joseph And His Amaz- ing Technicoloured Dream Coat. During 2007 Cameron recorded on the score of FOX 8 History Channel's program Kokoda. Since then Cameron has had a wealth of experience including performances in St Marks Ca- thedral in Venice, and Wells and Bristol Cathedrals in England while on tour with his choir in 2008. ''It was amazing because we did the Miserere which was pretty extraordinary as most choirs don't get this opportunity and it was also my first time overseas and it was beautiful,'' Cameron said. At only 13 he was chosen to sing solo at Nancy Bird Walton's state funeral, where his talent con- tinued to amaze. ''I was very honoured and it was a touching moment as this is one of the greatest achievers in Aust- ralia,'' he said. The boy who's always wanted to be like Pavaroti is one step closer to his dream. The Magic Flute is currently showing at the Opera House until March 19. Sluggish DA process speeding up FIONA BRADY THERE'S good news for anyone planning to renovate in Ashfield. Ashfield Council has slashed average processing times for de- velopment applications from 160 days to 126 days. It's a dramatic improvement for Ashfield, which was named and shamed by the Planning Depart- ment as the slowest council in the state in 2007-08. Mayor Ted Cassidy was de- lighted by the improvement. ''These are excellent results and I congratulate council staff on their efforts and commitment to continuous improvement,'' Cr Cassidy said. He said the council had over- hauled its development assess- ment systems after an indepen- dent review by planning consultants in late-2007. ''Key initiatives over the past six to 12 months have seen more staff resources allocated to devel- opment assessment, including a newly-created specialist planner position, and the increased use of heritage advisors,'' Cr Cassidy said. ''We also now offer a pre- lodgement review of all develop- ment proposals, where council thoroughly checks all proposed DAs and provides detailed advice to potential applicants. This ser- vice is helping to reduce the number of incomplete and poor quality applications and has been very well received by applicants." The council now has 36 out- standing DAs, compared with 133 this time last year. 2003916i iww wk34 MOREE MEATS Next to ALDI Supermarket, 1-22 George St, Nth Strathfield Trading Hrs: Mon-Sat - 6am to 6pm Sun - 8am to 4pm phone 9764 3316 fax orders 9746 5142 Compare our prices.
