Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : February 18th 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 19, 2009 11 NEWS shut up shops FIONA BRADY Shoppers at the entrance to Ashfield Mall. www.innerwestweekly.com.au TRANSLATION: This story is translated in Chinese at www.innerwestweekly.com.au ASHFIELD Mall says there is no cause for concern, despite some retailers moving out of the centre in recent months. Women's clothing chains Katies and Millers and bookshop Angus and Robertson are among the stores that have not renewed their leases. Liquorland has also closed. Wesfarmers, which own the Liquorland chain, has opened a 1st Choice bottleshop in a larger premises on Liverpool Rd. Shoppers who had noticed the gaps in the centre asked the Inner-West Weekly to investigate. A spokeswoman from Ashfield Mall centre management was not alarmed by the exodus, saying it was ''an inevitable part of the very competitive world of retailing that some tenants will choose not to renew their leases''. ''I can report that we have already signed new tenants to lease the space vacated by Katies and Millers and we are actively seeking tenants for the other vacant areas,'' the spokeswoman said. ''While the current state of the economy may limit the number of prospective ten- ants for other vacant areas, we feel that the Mall is in a stronger position to attract new tenants because of our extensive efforts to provide an attractive, contemporary shop- ping destination.'' The spokeswoman said $30 million had already been spent on improvements to the Mall, with the next stage to be the refurbishment of the food court. ''As the details have yet to be finalised, we have not filled some vacancies in that part of the Mall so as to provide maximum flexibility for the project and limit disrup- tion as much as possible,'' she said. Meanwhile Ashfield Mall's owner, Aba- cus Property Group, is awaiting a Land and Environment Court decision on whether it can proceed with plans for a $61 million redevelopment of the site that will include apartments. Abacus took Ashfield Council to court when it refused the development appli- cation, even though it had been recommended for approval by both council staff and an independent consultant. The Court's decision is due some time this month.
