Rebates are available for the purchase and installation of a new rainwater tank which is connected for internal re-use of the water for toilet and/or laundry use. Residents must deliver their house- hold chemicals by vehicle in a secure and labelled box. Chemicals will be collected from the Shakespeare St carpark behind the council's Admin- istration Centre in Campsie from 9am to 3pm. Call 131 555 for details. Layne Beachley says: Take your cans home with you and recycle Planet Ark ambassador Layne Beachley. SEVEN-TIME World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley is calling on Australians to help fight climate change by recycling aluminium cans. Last year Australians saved enough energy to power 65,000 homes for one year, just by recycling aluminium cans. But with a massive 900 million aluminium cans still going to landfill, Planet Ark is urging people to make an extra commitment to recycle all of their cans this summer. ''I used to recycle cans when I was a kid to buy lollies but these days the issues surrounding our recycling habits are much more serious,'' Planet Ark ambassador Layne Beachley said. ''Making aluminium cans from recycled materials uses 95 per cent less energy than producing them from scratch . . . so recycling all of our aluminium cans is one of the simplest things we can do to fight climate change.'' Planet Ark CEO Sean Barrett encourages people to take their cans home if they can't find a bin. ''If you are out and about and you cant find a recycling bin, take your aluminium cans home to recycle them,'' Mr Barrett said. ''Every aluminium can that goes to landfill, puts a strain on natural resources, and contributes to climate change by wasting valuable water and energy.'' For more information and drop off locations for recycling services in your local area go to Cans.Planetark.org or call the National Recycling Hotline on 1300 733 712. Pressure mounting for deposit on drink bottles A SMALL payment for the return of drink containers has doubled the amount of beverage container recycling in South Australia and pressure is mounting to finally introduce a container deposit scheme in NSW. The Local Government and Shires Association plus a host of environment groups say it is long overdue and surveys show higher than 80 per cent public support. The energy costs of making aluminium and glass containers from recycled containers is much less than harvesting raw materials and the environmental cost of plastics clogging our waterways, oceans and parks is taking a heavy toll, supporters of container deposit legislation (CDL) argued. Deputy Premier and Environment Minister Carmel Tebbutt said the Government was investigating the merits of national container deposit laws.
