Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : February 18th 2009
24 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 19, 2009 MB STREETVIEW No toes being dipped in Polly Thomas Pieter Reijneveld Steve Austin Peter Lewis Philip McGowen Two shark attacks in Sydney in recent weeks have made some people too afraid to dip a toe in the water. One attack occurred in the harbour in the early hours and the other happened in Bondi at dusk. There's been speculation that shark numbers are rising because of healthier ecosystems and shark fishing quotas. We asked local boaties in Drummoyne if they'd spotted any sharks locally and if they were nervous about getting in the water. Polly Thomas, from Getaway Sailing: I live in Drummoyne and I'm a keen beginner windsurfer. A week before the latest accident, my husband and I were both out windsurfing in the moonlight. Knowing what I know now, that won't happen again. Pieter Reijneveld, from Getaway Sailing: I've never seen any sharks in the harbour, only outside the harbour. I'm normally in a boat rather than actually in the water, but I would think twice before swimming at the minute. Steve Austin, from Ocean Yacht Sales: I've never seen any sharks and I've been around this area for 30 years. I'm in the boat business so I try to keep people out of the water. I think most of Sydney's beaches would be fine . . . they're pretty well patrolled nowadays. I'm not as sure about the beaches that aren't netted. Peter Lewis, from Premier Marine: I've never seen any sharks around the area but I have heard stories. I'd get in the water but it would depend on the time of day. Dusk and dawn I wouldn't get in, that's for sure. Philip McGowen, from Birkenhead Marina: We've got a resident diver who does all the diving for the marina and he hasn't reported any sightings of any sharks at the moment. I would think before getting in the water with the two attacks that have happened last week, but it wouldn't stop me. I probably just wouldn't go in the early hours of the morning or in the evening.
