MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 26, 2009 11 NEWS 'Extend scheme' plea ZILKA GROGAN CFMEU members rally at Breakfast Point. INNER West workers have joined a statewide campaign by the construction union encouraging the Federal Government to extend the first-home buyers grant. About 200 construction workers signed a petition at the Breakfast Point develop- ment site on Tuesday. The petition will be pres- ented to Lowe Federal Labor MP John Murphy. The Construction, For- estry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) is asking the Rudd Government to extend the homebuyers scheme beyond June 30. CFMEU state assistant secretary Mal Tulloch said the extra assistance was needed because the con- struction industry had been hit hard by the global econ- omic downturn. ''The first stimulus pack- age is generating jobs in the construction industry be- cause people -- especially young couples and families -- now have the opportunity to enter the housing mar- ket,'' Mr Tulloch said. ''And, as a result, building workers are benefiting from employment.'' The Federal Govern- ment's first economic stimulus package, an- nounced last October, in- cluded an increase of the first-home buyers payment to $14,000 for those buying an existing home and to $21,000 for those building their own home. According to the CFMEU, the stimulus package re- sulted in a 24 per cent increase in first-home buyers entering the market in the first six months. The union hopes that the government will extend the first-home buyers payment for another 12 months, to expire in June 2010. Looking for business banking exper tise? It pays to talk to a local.
