MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, February 26, 2009 45 ARTS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Left: Bernard Coutaz founded harmonia mundi in France almost on the smell of an oily rag from his old Citroen, while Brian Couzens, with his son Ralph, built Chandos from small and specialised beginnings into a prestige classical music label. A double celebration strictly for the record From vinyl long-players, through audio cassettes, eight-tracks, compact discs to digital downloading off the net into your computer or MP3 player, the recorded music industry has gone through some dramatic transformations since the end of the last century. STEVE MOFFATT reviews anniversary sets by two record labels that are not only surviving but flourishing TWO of classical music's innovative and most important record labels have celebrated anniversaries at the same time. Frenchman Bernard Coutaz founded harmonia mundi in Paris in 1958 with barely any money, an old Citroen for transport but plenty of good advice from friends. His philosophy was simple: To always enjoy what he released and to plough the profits back into the company to retain editorial independence. The formula worked because last year when the industry suffered an annus horribilis the mid-priced label notched up a 3-5 per cent growth. Across the Channel English prestige label Chandos is marking 30 years since being founded by Brian Couzens in 1979. Initially concentrating on British music, the company rapidly expanded both its catalogue and horizons to take in early music (with its Chaconne label) and contemporary composers. It also has a strong connection to Australia, featuring much of the late Richard Hickox's work including his short stint with Opera Australia. Both companies have celebrated by releasing generous 30-disc box sets at reasonable prices. The harmonia mundi set (priced at $149.95 though this may vary from store to store) is the only one I have listened to on my home stereo, but the Chandos collection, Milestones (rrp $139.95), sounds marvellous streamed from the net. Both collections are diverse and vastly different from each other. Harmonia mundi's is branded ''50 years of musical exploration'' and encompasses everything from Byzantine and Roman chants from the 7th and 8th centuries to the modern day, although the choice of Arvo Part as the only living composer is revealing in itself as his work is a mass which retains the echoes of earlier sacred music. In dollar terms the HM package is both more expensive and contains only 29 sides of music -- No 30 is devoted to texts. If you don't like the three operas -- Purcell's King Arthur (11/2 CDs), Lully's Atys (21/2), and 18th century German composer Reinhard Keiser's little-known Croesus (3 sides) -- and the 21/2 CDs devoted to Philippe Herreweghe's landmark Bach St Matthew's Passion recording, you're enjoyment will be somewhat depleted. But there are some glorious jacks in this box and if you like your counter-tenors HM has three of the best in Alfred Deller, Renee Jacob and Andreas Scholl. Classical and Romantic periods are also catered for but this is very much Coutaz's personal collection, quirks and all. Perhaps more mainstream is the Chandos collection, though some listeners may find it weighted a bit too much in favour of 20th century British composers. It does contain some excellent Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky performances, however. Among the gems is Delius's Sea Drift, with Hickox conducting the Bournemouth Symphony and with Bryn Terfel in top form. A 1980s Nigel Kennedy recording of violin works by Elgar, including the lovely sonata, with Peter Pottinger on piano, is also a highlight. Handel fans will love the luminous Chandos Anthems. Among the eclipsed composers that Couzens delights in bringing into the sunlight are Johann Nepomuk Hummel -- who is well represented with Stephen Hough giving lovely performances of a couple of his piano concertos as well as Hickox (again) conducting his masses -- and Johann Baptiste Vanhal, who counted both Haydn and Mozart as friends and colleagues. His symphonies are revelations. Both sets are distributed by Select on www.savd.com.au and are available at good music stores.
