MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 5, 2009 13 NEWS Business shows generous spirit www.innerwestweekly.com.au TRANSLATION: This story is translated in Chinese at www.innerwestweekly.com.au BIG-HEARTED members of Ashfield's Chinese business community have donated $5800 to the victims of the Victorian bushfires. Thomas Jin from the Ashfield Business Chamber said his colleagues wanted to support fellow Australians in their time of need. ''We are all Australians and we are pleased to be able to offer this gesture of support to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal," he said. ''Australian people have always been very generous when China is in need of support, such as our earthquake in 2008, and we are pleased to reciprocate this support,'' he said. The collection was initiated by George Yuan from Gloria Jean's Coffee in Ashfield Mall. Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy said he was proud of the ''generosity of spirit'' in Ashfield. ''This is a self-initiated and spontaneous response from Ashfield's Chinese business community to one of the most terrible tragedies Australia has faced,'' he said. ''To have more than 49 local businesses, ranging from restaurants, supermarkets, butchers and hairdressers to real estate agents and seafood stores, is a wonderful indication of the solidarity and generosity of the local Chinese business community.'' The Ashfield community has donated more than $15,000 to the Red Cross Appeal, including a $5000 donation from the council and $4000 raised by the Haberfield Red Cross branch.
