2 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 12, 2009 MB Ad has some up in arms The advertisement that features Robert Borsak. From Page 1 But it is the ''Hunters -- First in Conservation'' tagline on the ads urging people to ''hunt to protect native flora and fauna'' that generate controversy. Mr Borsak, who is also chair- man of the Shooters Party, sees hunters as ''the original conservationists''. ''Conservation hunting . . . is really all about trying to encour- age people to . . . hunt game and feral animals on the basis that, if we can mitigate or control the impact of those animals on that estate, we can give our native species a better chance.'' He stresses how strictly regu- lated the hunting industry is in NSW. As well as having a gun licence, hunters are tested on humane hunting techniques and safety before being granted a restricted licence to give them the right to hunt on public land. They must also lodge reports after every hunt. But he is particularly infuri- ated by any ''sensationalist'' reporting linking the rise in licensed firearms' ownership in NSW to crime. ''Firearms owners are prob- ably the most scrutinised and police-checked group in so- ciety,'' he said. Police Minister Tony Kelly said the theme of a state govern- ment's firearms amnesty and public education campaign is ''Taking the Gun out of the Equation''. Mr Kelly said the three-month amnesty would give people with unregistered guns a chance to hand them in -- with no questions asked -- before May 31.
