But the fire almost spiralled out of control when the downforce of the rescue helicop- ter fanned the flames, police say. The accident happened about 1pm on March 11 when the 52-year-old man crashed the 750cc quad bike on a steep slope on a friend's property in Reids Flat, injuring his back and fracturing his pelvis. The man tried to drag himself back to the farmhouse which was about 300m away, but his injuries were too serious. He had to stay in the rugged area of bushland overnight and lit a number of small fires during the night to keep warm. Eventually the man lit a fire large enough to be noticed and the Rural Fire Service was contacted. They located the in- jured man at 9.45am. Police, ambulance workers and Air Ambulance attended but due to the terrain, the man had to be winched to the heli- copter and taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious condition. However, due to the downforce of the helicopter, the fire intensified and more RFS and fire bombing planes had to be called. The fire was brought under control about 3pm. Cootamundra Detective Acting-Insp David Cockram re- minded people to notify others of their plans before going out into the bush. ''I'd encourage members of the public who are travelling in isolated areas to let people know where you are going and how long you're expecting to be,'' he said. ''If something does go wrong, then we know where to look for you.'' All wrong: expert planner From Page 1 ''I don't see any provisions for providing a viable alternative to assist businesses during such harsh economic circumstances. ''At the very least the govern- ment must conduct an area- wide traffic management study to identify the treatments needed to maintain the safety and amenity of the local area. ''Anything else is not accept- able,'' he said. 2091579k wk39
