MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 19, 2009 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Our tunnel visionaries Ma'ata Langi, Gabriela Pangilinan, Patrick Shutlar and Maria Murillo in the transformed tunnel in Ashfield. Picture: BRENT McGILVARY FIONA BRADY A ''SCARY'' pedestrian tunnel in Ashfield has been transformed into a walk-through art gallery, thanks to this awesome foursome from St Vincent's Primary School. Two years ago, Gabriela Pangilinan, Ma'ata Langi, Maria Murillo and Patrick Shutlar wrote a letter to Ashfield Council for a school project, asking it to clean up the Brown St tunnel. It was covered in ''bad words'' and was ''scary'', they said. Their letter prompted Ashfield Council and RailCorp to take action and The Underline Project was born. Community artist Bronwyn Tuohy was commissioned to transform the tunnel into a public art gallery. Under her guidance, more than 400 people from playgroups, schools and community groups created colourful artworks which hang in the finished walkway alongside historical photographs of Ashfield. Last Thursday, the four St Vincent's students who inspired the project came to look at the re- vamped tunnel and gave it the thumbs up. ''You can learn about Ashfield's history,'' Patrick said. Maria said: ''I like the Aborigi- nal paintings.'' Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy praised the four young people for their initiative. ''If that is Australia today, then the future is guaranteed,'' Cr Cassidy said. He said the tunnel had projected an ''unfriendly atmosphere'' over the years, but was now much more welcoming for the community. ''Previously there was a lot of graffiti and tagging activity in the tunnel and many people were avoiding using it,'' he said. Ashfield Council would provide ongoing graffiti maintenance, Cr Cassidy said. RailCorp Customer Service gen- eral manager George Stojkovski said the project would help beautify Ashfield Station and would give local artists and students a strong sense of owner- ship of their area. Solace for when things go wrong A COMMUNITY Access Program designed to help consumers and business owners learn more about their rights and responsibilities is running in Burwood this week. Strathfield MP and Fair Trading Minister Virginia Judge said the sessions would ensure people across the electorate knew where they could turn for advice or support if things went wrong. Sessions dates include: Self Managing Landlords sem- inar at Burwood RSL, 3.30pm to 5.30pm, March 19 Community Services Expo at Burwood RSL, 10am to 1pm, March 20. Uni's top young woman award FIGEN Cingiloglu, of Strathfield, was nominated for the Young Women category in the University of Western Sydney's Women of the West Awards. Cingiloglu was nominated for her work as the co-ordinator of the Pro Bono Student program, which gives law students the chance to use their skills to support disad- vantaged people in our society. While she didn't win, she said the nomination was unexpected and she was very proud. ''I was extremely shocked -- I just came home after I got admitted as a solicitor and I found I that I had been nominated,'' Cingiloglu said. ''It's great because it shows that all your hard work pays off.'' * Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your health care professional.
