MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 19, 2009 15 Natural alternative: Organic green waste gets perfectly blended CANADA Bay residents have been thanked for recycling their lawn clippings and tree branches. WSN Environmental Solutions, which is contracted to receive garden organics from Canada Bay Council, has brought its 250,000th tonne of garden organic to its Eastern Creek processing centre. The organics are turned into high quality compost and soil conditioning products. ''Recycled organic products made from domestic garden organics provide a great alternative for a number of market sectors including landscaping, home gardening, horticulture and agriculture," said the company's CEO Ken Kanofski. ''Properly blended and composted recycled organic products can provide a natural alternative to using virgin soils, which are increasingly in short supply in the Sydney basin.'' However, Mr Kanofski said that a small percentage of garden organics batches were contaminated with domestic waste and containers. ''It's a costly process to remove glass and plastic from the bins and if a batch is contaminated, part of it may have to go to landfill which is a waste of natural resources,'' he said. ''If residents are unable to put all of their waste or recyclables into the bins provided, rather than contaminating the garden organics bin, we simply ask that you seek advice from your local council.'' Fridge buyback scheme has been hailed a cool idea STRATHFIELD Council's Fridge Buyback Scheme has been hailed a success, with residents handing in over 100 fridges and reducing their greenhouse emissions by 903 tonnes. Residents with a fridge at least 10 years or over, and 250 litres or larger, qualify for the scheme. By handing in their old fridge, residents could save over $190 per year in electricity bills. Strathfield Council is ranked seventh out of the 38 local governments in NSW who take part in the buyback program. Visit www.fridgebuyback.com.au or call 1800 708 401.
