20 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 19, 2009 Kooka Kids Club CHILDREN visit zoos to learn all about the magic of the animal kingdom. But imagine the wonders of a zoo where only the most magical of creatures live in cages and reserves. The Zoo of Magical and Mythological Creatures, a new book by Sam Bowring (pictured), turns this fantasy into a reality. The book tells the story of Zackary, a reluctant young knight, who is sent on an errand to a zoo which was first set up by his grandfather. The zoo is home to a range of mythological creatures including Stymphalian birds, a nine-headed hydra, manticores, and squonks, who are covered in warts and spend most of their time crying. Zackary starts to work at the zoo. Magic is needed to control the fantastic animals, but just as Zackary begins to settle in with a bunch of fun and funny new friends, a very dangerous new animal arrives. Sam Bowring has been a stand-up comedian, has appeared on radio and has written for a number of TV shows including Rove. He said he had a great time writing his first book for children. He had a tough time trying to decide his favourite creatures at the zoo. "I'll have to say the squonks, because if I don't they might start crying again, and melt into a pool of puddles on the floor," he said. The book is selling at bookstores for $15. We are giving away 10 copies to celebrate its release. To enter the competition and meet some magical creatures up close and personal, visit Kooka Kids Club at www.trevor.com.au/kidsnetwork/ kooka.asp Come to the Surviving Australia exhibition at the Australian Museum to hear stories of Australia's animal inhabitants and tales of their adaptation and survival over millions of years of changing climate and landscape.
