MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 26, 2009 9 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Rehab for petty crims SHIREEN KHALIL Strathfield MP Virginia Judge and Attorney General John Hatzis- tergos announce the CREDIT Program at Burwood Court. Picture: BRENT McGILVARY ~PP258287 BURWOOD courthouse will trial a new crime-prevention program that aims to reduce re-offending among small-time criminals. State Attorney-General John Hatzistergos, who announced the court referral of eligible defend- ants into treatment (CREDIT) scheme last Friday at Burwood Court, said it would be trialled for two years from August. ''The aim of CREDIT is to ident- ify criminal defendants who are at high risk of re-offending and steer them into treatment programs and social services,'' he said. The scheme, which is modelled on New York's community court program, focuses on problems such as drug, alcohol and gam- bling addictions, mental illness, unemployment, lack of vocational skills and homelessness. ''This is about addressing the root causes of criminal behaviour to help stop offenders graduating to further or more serious crimes,'' Mr Hatzistergos said. He said the program would benefit the community by keeping the offenders out of trouble. ''The court will use a computer- based screening process devel- oped by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research to identify defendants who will be eligible to participate,'' he said. ''Using information such as age, gender, the offence and prior criminal record, the program is able to predict individuals at high risk of re-offending with a high degree of accuracy.'' Mr Hatzistergos said involve- ment in CREDIT would signify a defendant's commitment to get their lives in order. ''This could be considered favourably by the court at sentencing,'' he said. Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge was pleased to have her electorate selected for the program. ''Here we have the opportunity to showcase an innovative crime- prevention program that could potentially be rolled out across the state,'' Ms Judge said. Weekend of monster fun for skaters SHIREEN KHALIL Video Online Watch it now at www.innerwestweekly.com.au MONSTER Skate Park was home to Australia's talented junior skateboarders and world famous pro skaters for the SbA Dew Series finals on the weekend. The 14 years and under boys kicked off the day at Sydney Olympic Park linking some clean combinations throughout the course. Silverwater's Matthew Robin was up there busting tricks in the indoor street course but it wasn't enough to secure first place against Sydneysider Ryan Bowen. ''I didn't do everything I could have and the competitors were really good, they are the best from all over Australia,'' Matthew said. The 14 year old hopes to be apart of next year's Sba series final. World famous pro skater Tony Hawk and his Birdhouse team surprised the crowd and per- formed a free demonstration alongside world vert champion Renton Miller. Miller, who has been a pro skater for eight years, always looked up to Hawk and couldn't wait to get on the vert ramp with him. ''He was my idol growing up, he is a great guy, he is dedicated, he is pretty inspirational and defi- nitely goes out of his way to make a lot of people happy,'' Miller said.
