These unsung heroes could be your friend, workmate, neighbour, your child's teacher, the local police officer or firefighter or simply someone who makes a difference and has made your community a better place to live. Ten sterling silver Pride of Australia medals will be awarded across 10 categories that celebrate and honour values and attributes -- young leader, environment, outstanding bravery, courage, community spirit, care and compassion, fair go, serving Australia, child of courage and emergency services. The Pride of Australia medal is a national award program that will culminate for the first time in a national ceremony and a television project. Winners will first be recognised and honoured at a special ceremony event held in their relevant state and territory in July 2009. Short-listed nominations will be judged by a panel of local community leaders and senior representatives from News Limited newspapers in each state and territory and the winners will be announced in that newspaper. Nominations will close at 5pm, Monday, April 13. I have been an active member for over 13 years and have learnt many new skills including how to operate machinery, radio transmission procedures and first aid skills. The Strathfield SES has 20 volunteers that are ready to assist the community at short notice however we are calling for new volunteers. So if your interested in learning new skills and enjoy working as part of a team the SES might be just the place for you.
