MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 26, 2009 15 NEWS Italian Bilingual School Year 1 students Nicolas Yule (left) and Thomas Chahoud get their heads shaved by Anita Zamattia. Picture: DANNY AARONS ~PP258416 Students take the razor to leukemia THERE was a real buzz in the air at the Italian Bilingual School on Norton St, Leichhardt, recently. The noise wasn't just from the No.1 buzz cuts that Nicolas Yule and Thomas Chahoud, both aged 6, cheerfully opted for -- it was also the buzz from hundreds of children and parents who had gathered to watch. The World's Greatest Shave event was particularly poignant because Nicolas's two-year-old sister Mia has leukemia. Mum Maria Yule, of Drummoyne, said her family felt really supported by the event, particularly after the difficult year Mia had in 2008. ''Last year we spent 140 days in hospital from May to December,'' Ms Yule said. Her daughter is now in remission. ''Now these kids have got a 90 per cent chance cure rate because of fundraising,'' Ms Yule said. In the 1960s leukemia was fatal. Tanya Chahoud said $5000 had been raised. ''It turned out great,'' she said. ''We didn't even realise that the whole school was going to come down. ''We were all overwhelmed by it.'' Both boys were overjoyed with their new haircuts, stroking their heads continuously and grinning. SIP AND CELEBRATE AT CANADA BAY'S TEA FESTIVAL!
