16 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, March 26, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Students learn who belongs SHIREEN KHALIL Aunty Mae talks to Burwood Public School students about the Stolen Generation on Harmony Day. Picture: BRENT McGILVARY ~PP257934 THE key message of Harmony Day is ''Everyone belongs'', and every- one at Burwood Public School came together at the school's as- sembly to celebrate the special day last Friday. Since Harmony Day began 10 years ago, thousands of schools, community groups and organis- ations across Australia have hosted events. This year Burwood Public had several special guests, including Aunty Mae, who was part of the Stolen Generations. Principal Paul Bates said the students enjoyed her speech and understood the importance of the day. ''The message she delivered was done in a level students could understand and what it was like for her being taken away from her family,'' Mr Bates said. ''I thought it was a wonderful day. ''It was a big step, but a small step for students in assisting in the reconciliation process, and this sort of thing goes a long way in helping the reconciliation for Aboriginal people.'' Strathfield State Labor MP and Assisting Arts Minister Virginia Judge also attended the assembly and delivered a speech on how much of a wonderful gesture it was for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to say sorry and to start this process. Mr Bates said the day was important to the students in understanding about Harmony Day. ''It was very moving in the sense that Burwood Public can contrib- ute in the reconciliation process with kind words and gestures from students,'' he said. A dizzy dance to Disney SHANNON ANDREUCCI FOR many the magic of Disney World seems planets away, but for the Dorothy Cowie School of Dancing in Croydon it's within arm's reach as they prepare to journey there next month. The States-bound dancing troupe members are putting on their pumps and embarking on a two-week dancing experience of a lifetime to the Caribbean and Florida in America. They will perform their 30-minute dance routine, choreographed by teaching staff Rebecca Travaglini and Vanessa Bruno, on the Disney World and Universal Studios stages, as well as a Caribbean cruise ship. Along with the multiple per- formances of dance genres in- cluding ballet, tap, jazz and hip- hop, the students will also be attending dance workshops at Disney's Magic Music Days. School principal Donna Burland said this experience is a chance for the students to perform on a global scale and develop their dancing skills. The talented hoofers, joined by their families and friends, are also eagerly anticipating the opportunity for an exciting holiday and free time in theme parks and aboard cruise ships.
