Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : April 8th 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, April 9, 2009 21 Councils' chance to win: Mustering mobile phones NOMINATE your local council for the 09 MobileMuster Local Government Awards. The awards celebrate the efforts councils make in promoting and collecting mobile phones, batteries, chargers and accessories for recycling. The five winning councils will be announced during the Australian Local Government Association Conference in June. The manager of MobileMuster, Rose Read, has encouraged inner-west councils to enter. ''Councils play a major role in educating local communities about waste and recycling,'' she said. ''In addition the network of participating councils helps boost our annual collection of recycled mobile phones, batteries and accessories. ''In the last 12 months to December 2008, local councils have handed in more than 3700kg of mobile phones, batteries and accessories, which would have included more than 24,000 handsets and batteries as well as 1500kg in accessories.'' Nominations are open until Tuesday, June 9. For more information or to nominate your council, visit www.mobilemuster.com.au or call 1300 730070. ASHFIELD'S De La Salle College has formed its first student Climate Change Committee. Teacher Russell Newman said the committee (known as C3) had already competed its first task -- to promote participation in Earth Hour. ''The committee is dedicated to raising awareness within our school of climate change and its devastating impacts, whilst also endeavouring to create a greener and more sustainable school,'' he said. The committee also arranged for a delivery of more than 20 new paper recycling bins from Visy recycling, he said. Mr Russell said in term two the students' aims would be to access money from environmental grants and to raise the committee's profile within the school. ''The enthusiasm of these students, as well as their commitment to trying to make a difference to their world, is to be commended and De La Salle is proud of their endeavours,'' he said. He said all students were welcome to join the committee. Urban Nature Photography Competition Enter your photo of urban nature and you could win a share of $3000 worth of prizes.
