Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP265702 SKYSCRAPERS up to 32 storeys tall may soon transform the Rhodes skyline if the suburb's four major developers get their way. The developers have collabor- ated to put together a draft master plan, in which they propose build- ing additional infrastructure in return for being allowed signifi- cantly increased floor space and building heights. Currently the maximum num- ber of storeys allowed in Rhodes is 12.The increase would be equivalent to around 650 to 780 new homes, additional to the 4500 homes that have already received planning permission. In return, the developers -- Mirvac Homes, Billbergia, Multiplex and Meriton Develop- ments -- have proposed providing additional infrastructure, such as a community centre and a public plaza. The draft master plan was dis- cussed at last Tuesday's meeting of Canada Bay Council, where councillors voted to give it con- sideration subject to full details of the public benefit. But at the meeting Cr Neil Kenzler expressed concerns about the already ''very limited park- ing'' in Rhodes, and called on developers to disclose it to future residents. ''Under the planning controls, the developers only have to pro- vide very limited parking spaces,'' Cr Kenzler said afterwards. He proposed an amendment call- ing on the developers to consider solutions to reduce car depen- dency and improve mobility. ToPage4
