Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP267131 BURWOOD'S footpaths are crack- ing up, and the council is power- less to do anything about it, a councillor has warned. Cr John Faker said Burwood Council has no money to fix the problem, despite it being the No. 1 complaint of residents. He also singled out Croydon and Enfield as footpath black spots, particularly Queen St. ''Queen St is in a state of urgent repair -- it is damaged with pot- holes, lifted footpaths and cracks and it's unsafe,'' Cr Faker said, adding that Queen St connected to two schools and the Burwood town centre. Last September Burwood Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook put forward a mayoral minute to suspend all council land sales. Cr Faker said because of this, there was no funding to pay for footpath repairs. ''We're a council which promotes people getting around and looking at our beautiful heri- tage streets, yet we're not provid- ing safe footpaths,'' he said. However Cr Furneaux-Cook said the land sales had only been stopped for eight weeks while they were reviewed by unani- mous resolution of the new council. ''After the review, council voted to continue the progress of the sales. ''The review did not signifi- cantly impact on council's operat- ing budget.'' Cr Faker said that, when he was mayor in 2002, the council spent $2 million over the first year on a WalkSafe Program, which ident- ified footpaths at risk.
