MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, April 23, 2009 15 NEWS Premier Nathan Rees and State Labor MP Angela D'Amore visited Concord Hospital last Friday to inspect the new electronic medical records system. For the record, system's better ILLEGIBLE doctors' hand- writing is no longer a prob- lem at Concord Hospital after the introduction of a new electronic medical re- cords system. The system makes secure patient information avail- able to authorised staff at computer workstations around the hospital, replac- ing many existing paper records. Premier Nathan Rees and Drummoyne State Labor MP Angela D'Amore were given a demonstration when they visited Concord Hospital last Friday. Mr Rees said the tech- nology would free up doc- tors and nurses to focus on patients and not paperwork. ''Prior to its introduction, some requests for medical imaging and pathology could require referral back to the requesting clinicians due to incomplete or il- legible handwritten re- cords,'' he said. ''It's the way of the future and will eventually allow patient information to be seamlessly and securely ac- cessible in every public hospital.'' Results from the first hos- pitals that received the new system, including Concord, showed most requests for blood tests and X-rays were made electronically. The government says the system will reduce waiting times and delays in retriev- ing clinical information, as well as reducing the poten- tial for mistakes. The system will be in- stalled in most public hos- pitals by the end of 2010. But make it snappy KEEN photographers in the Parramatta River catchment area are invited to get snapping and enter the 2009 Urban Nature Photographic Competition, to explore the local environment and show what makes it special. The competition has two categories: the open section, for people over 18; and the young people's section, for those under 18 years. Entries will close on Monday, May 18. Workshops will also be held to give people an opportunity to learn more about photographic techniques and experience their local environment. ''By encouraging people to capture the beauty and importance of their local animals, plants and natural areas through the lens, communities will gain a greater awareness of the need to protect their local environment,'' Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy said. An awards ceremony and exhibition will conclude the competition in June, and winning photos will be used in a special web gallery promoting the natural beauty of the Parramatta River catchment.
