Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : April 29th 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, April 30, 2009 21 STREETVIEW In a jitter over Twitter Joan Jennings Phil Devitt Laura O'Haey Santo Rizzuto Sweta Ghelani Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are gaining popularity as the new way to communicate. Recently in the US, employees were fired after posting photos and videos online. We asked residents just how much people should be held accountable for what they publish outside of work. Santo Rizzuto, Lilyfield ''I don't think Facebook was meant for that. I mainly use email but people are always on Facebook. It's for photos and sharing and I don't think people should be sacked for that. It's going to take a while to balance out and to be fair, people need to see both sides.'' Joan Jennings, USA ''We had that trouble with email. At my work, we have a main computer and emails can get sent to us, but we can't send emails out. They don't want us emailing friends. Employers have to be careful because people can start abusing it.'' Sweta Ghelani, Five Dock ''There are a lot of staff that use social media and it's about how much we are going to license what people say. Companies can't say you have to think leftist, or say you can't be pro-choice or pro-life. People need to take responsibility because Facebook or Twitter is more public then sending a postcard. I don't think they should be fired or sacked because of their views.'' Laura O'Haey, Lane Cove ''There should be more rules and more restrictions about what employers see. People can protect their profiles and their photos so they have to be responsible. Employees shouldn't take photos at work and upload them anyway.'' Phil Devitt, Pennant Hills ''It's a privacy issue and there are two sides. There is an expected behaviour at work and it's about the commitment of the employee to the employer. It will settle down, like mobile phones and all that. It will take time. It's about personal respons- ibility, of knowing oneself.'' -- by work experience student Amanda Hoh OPINION Sat 9 May Wed 27 May 9.30am - 11.30am 9.00am - 11.00am College Tours ForYears5&72010 Limited vacancies in other entry years Enrol Now An Independent Catholic Dominican School, Girls K-12, Boys K-4 90 e Boulevarde Strathfield 2135 | Ph: 9745 7030 | Email: firstname.lastname@example.org www.ssc.nsw.edu.au Discover Santa Sabina College Opportunities that encourage independence, resilience, creativity and critical thinking For their Future
