Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : April 29th 2009
22 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, April 30, 2009 MB NEWS Renshaw swims in Matt Renshaw -- pictured with Alice, 2, of Burwood Heights and Aryan, 4 -- will be the manager of Forbes Carlile's new swim centre in Five Dock. SHIREEN KHALIL In the swim: Renshaw and Forbes Carlile. LEGENDARY Australian swimming coach Forbes Carlile is launching his newest swimming school in the Inner West. Carlile started his pro- fessional coaching career in Drummoyne and, more than 50 years later, decided to launch his newest swim- ming school, Carlile Swim- ming Five Dock, which will open on May 18. The dedicated coach has worked with a long list of Australian swimming champions. Among the list of successful Carlile Swim- ming graduates is Common- wealth Games gold medal- list Matt Renshaw, who was recently appointed manager of the new centre. Renshaw, who has lived in Croydon Park for 10 years, is best known for bringing home a gold medal from the 1986 Common- wealth Games, where he swam the 4x100m freestyle relay as part of the famed Mean Machine. ''Swimming has always been a huge part of my life and I'm really excited to be able to share that vital skill with families in my local area,'' Renshaw said. ''The ability to swim is essential for everyone and I really encourage all parents to ensure their children get proper swimming instruc- tion. ''There is just so much water around us -- pools, rivers, beaches -- and it's really a big part of our life in this country.'' Carlile Swimming Five Dock has been specially de- signed to meet the needs of learn-to-swim classes and Renshaw said it's poten- tially dangerous if people don't know how to swim. ''If you can't swim, it's a big safety issue, but beyond that it also means you don't have the opportunity to par- ticipate in a lot of activi- ties,'' Renshaw said. While his main focus will be overseeing the operation of the facility, Renshaw will spend time in the water with students. ''It's a hands-on role and it's important for me to be able to teach the Carlile swimming system, so I will be taking a few classes here and there,'' he said. Classes cater for all ages and range from water confi- dence sessions for young babies through to squads. ''Swimming is a skill for life that everyone should learn,'' Carlile said.
