Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : April 29th 2009
60 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, April 30, 2009 MB ARTS listenup STEVE MOFFATT ONE of the happiest CDs to come my way lately is Nomadak tx by Oreka tx (World Village WV468085), two musicians who have taken their name from the traditional Basque percussion instrument the txalaparta. Made from wood and played by two performers, it sounds like a marimba or that guy at Museum station who plays the bottles, depending on materials to hand. The duo, Harkaitz Mtnz de San Vincente and Igor Otxoa, both of San Sebastian, took their instrument and a film crew to various parts of the world on a musical journey. The resulting doco, which has won several awards, is due to be shown in Australia some time this year. I can confidently predict that sales of this world music CD will go feral when it does. Patching in some Mongolian chanting here, singers and storytellers from the Sahara, Lapland and India there, this is truly a global mishmash. It shouldn't work, but it does -- mainly because of some strong melodies, driving rhythms and fascinating array of cultures and humanity. And of course the feel-good, contagious sounds of the txalaparta. It gets under your skin and is distributed by Select on www.savd.com.au RRP $19.70+GST. THE ABC has released the fifth, and last, in its French baroque chamber works series The Perfection of Music. Titled The Musician's Table, here are five tasty courses indeed featuring instrumental pieces by four 18th century French composers who were beginning to absorb the influences of Corelli, Vivaldi and the Italians. These little-known works are a delight and in particular the music of Joseph Bodin de Boismortier -- a sonata for two cellos and a trio for violin, cello and harpsichord -- is a revelation. Best known of the three composers is Jean-Fery Rebel, represented here with a short and very sweet four-movement sonata for flute, violin and continuo, but his more neglected colleagues Philidor and Guillemain are equally satisfying. Ensemble Battistin -- Kate Clark, flute, Paul Wright and Sophie Gent, violins, Suzanne Wiseman and Noeleen Wright, cellos, and Stewart Smith, harpsichord -- are splendid and imbue this music with the elegance and refinement of a French aristocracy shortly to lose everything to the guillotine. Available to ABC outlets and music shops, or online at abcshop.com.au, it retails for $30.95. ALBAN Berg's enthusiasm for his mentor Arnold Schoenberg's new ''atonal'' and later his ''12-tone'' music masks the fact that both these composers had a deep love of the older Viennese music. Berg was a great admirer of Mahler, for example, and you can hear his influence in the lushly-orchestrated Three pieces Op 6 as well as the symphonic sections from Berg's operas Lulu and Wozzeck. All these pieces are featured on a splendid double CD on the Chandos label (CHSA 5074) with Mario Venzago conducting the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Perhaps more of a suprise was Berg's reverence for the Strauss waltz family - this carefree and sophisticated dance music seemingly far-removed from the dark palettes used by the Second Viennese School of composers. Some much-needed light relief to this set is provided by Berg's affectionate adaptation of Johann II's Wein, Wein und Gesang! for a small ensemble. Strangely two versions of Der Wein - a concert aria based on three Baudelaire poems - are included, one with tenor Robert Murray and soprano Geraldine McGreevy singing the other. McGreevy is also heavily featured in the operatic excerpts, but perhaps the most beautiful and poignant of all these works is the violin concerto, with Isabelle van Keulen as soloist. This work was written when Berg heard of the death of the teenage daughter of his friend Alma Mahler.
