Xenia's fingers fly SHIREEN KHALIL VIOLINIST Xenia Deviatkina-Loh's bow will be a blur as she plays for high stakes in the strings final of a prestigious music award. The 18-year-old, who won a full music scholarship to MLC Burwood in 2003, is one of 12 talented musicians who will be competing in Stage III of the ABC Sym- phony Australia Young Per- former of the Year awards. Deviatkina-Loh started playing violin when she was just six and, a year later, took up piano. The talented young Burwood musician has won numerous awards over the years, including the Hephzibah Menuhin Mem- orial Award in 2006. If Deviatkina-Loh wins in her instrumental category (strings), she will earn a $5000 cash prize and a place in the grand final. The 2009 strings finalists are also eligible to win the Nelly Apt Scholarship, with $15,000 to provide assistance for study in Israel. The ABC's Christopher Lawrence will compere all Stage III finals and they'll be broadcast live on ABC Classic FM. The competition is also the subject of an ABC Tele- vision special to be screened on Sunday Arts later in the year. The grand final will be held next October in Adelaide with the winner earning a $20,000 cash prize, a compact disc recording of their winning performance and a concert engagement with a major Australian symphony orchestra.
