Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : May 6th 2009
16 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, May 7, 2009 MB NEWS How 'tweet' it is A screen grab of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas's Twitter profile. ''TWITTERING'' and ''tweets'' are the new words on the vocabulary list for Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas. Cr Tsirekas is the only mayor in the Inner West who has joined Twitter, the social networking website that is keeping people con- nected and informed all hours of the day. ''It's important for some- one in the public office that has a role in informing the community to be involved in an exchange of infor- mation,'' Cr Tsirekas said. ''For me, it's interesting to be constant and relating to the people out there. It's exciting and a new way to get yourself out there.'' Twitter users follow other profiles and communicate through status updates. People write about what they're doing or thinking and updates are recorded with the time and date. Cr Tsirekas said his Twit- ter profile, Anget, was a form of advertisement for the local area. Followers can read that he was going to attend the Anzac Day ceremony at Concord RSL, or that the council is now responsible for the maintenance of the Rhodes peninsula. Though Twitter's popu- larity is still in its early stages compared to other social sites like Facebook, it seems that online status updates are the way to prog- ress into the future. Cr Tsirekas said that while newspapers are still popular, people want to read less, keep updated and get more direct information. ''I think the days of writ- ing too much are over -- people are sort of switching off, it's changing and evolv- ing, and people in elected positions need to have the ability to do that,'' he said. The mayor has also adver- tised his Facebook profile on the Canada Bay website, which he says is just an- other way of staying con- nected with the community. ''I always like to think Canada Bay is progressive and is always looking at new ways of doing things better and new ways to promote itself,'' he said. ''I mean, Twittering -- the Prime Minister is doing it . . .andifhe'sdoingitthen there must be a reason.'' -- by work experience student Amanda Hoh PUBLIC NOTICE Developments Approved DA No Address/Subject/Approval Date DA2009/012 5 Cartwright Avenue, Homebush -- approved 24 April 2009 Alterations and additions to existing single storey dwelling, demolition of existing garage and construction of a new garage DA2008/024 102-110 Parramatta Road, Homebush -- approved 23 April 2009 Strata subdivision DA2008/425/01 3 Mirrabooka Avenue, Strathfield -- approved 17 April 2009 Alterations and additions to existing dwelling DA2009/007 36 Newton Road, Strathfield -- approved 14 April 2009 -- deferred commencement consent Demolition of existing structures and construction of a new two (2) storey dwelling DA2008/459 45 Abbotsford Road, Strathfield -- approved 7 April 2009 Alterations and additions to existing dwelling DA2008/440 78 Newton Road, Strathfield -- approved 6 April 2009 Construction of an in-ground swimming pool DA2009/036 50 Pemberton Street, Strathfield -- approved 6 April 2009 Demolition of existing dwelling DA2009/029 117 Parramatta Road, Homebush -- approved 3 April 2009 Conversion and use of existing waste management room as a private communal laundry council chambers: 65 Homebush Rd, Strathfield NSW 2135 p) 9748 9999 f) 9764 1034 business hours: 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday postal address: PO Box 120, Strathfield NSW 2135 e) email@example.com w) www.strathfield.nsw.gov.au STRATHFIELD COUNCIL 2102119i iww wk45 Authorised by the Australian Government, Capital Hill, Canberra Advertisement ATOTB4/7 One-off tax-free payments start from early April 2009.
