4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, May 14, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au It's a 'win, win, win' all-round An artist's impression of what Ashfield Civic Centre will look like. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP276141 He wasn't wearing the big red suit, but Anthony Albanese played Santa Claus in the Inner West last Wednesday -- delivering $7.6 million of goodies to delighted local councils. The Grayndler Federal MP's day started at Drummoyne Oval at 9am where he announced $5.3 million of funding for Drummoyne Oval. After dashing off to make more announce- ments outside the area, he was back in the Inner West once more by noon. At Ashfield he announced a $2.3 million grant towards the Civic Centre project, obviously enjoying his role as Kris Kringle. The funding is part of the $800 million Community Infrastructure Program, a stimulus package to try to stave off the worst effects of the global economic crisis. FIONA BRADY Could the money be better spent elsewhere? Tell us at www.innerwestweekly.com.au A NEW youth centre is to be built in the heart of Ashfield. The youth centre and an early childhood centre will now be in- cluded in the Ashfield Civic Centre redevelopment, after Ashfield Council received a $2.3 million grant towards the project from the Federal Govern- ment. Because of budget constraints, these were to have been built in the secondary phase of the re- development. The extra funding will also allow the town hall to be refur- bished. Announcing the grant on Wednesday, Grayndler Federal Labor MP and Infrastructure Min- ister Anthony Albanese said it was ''win, win, win'' for Ashfield. ''Good for jobs, good for the economy, good for the long-term community, good for social capital in Ashfield, not just physical capi- tal and that's a great thing,'' he said. Mr Albanese also joked about Ashfield's current nondescript civic buildings which are tucked behind the town hall. ''Frankly, it's been pretty hard for people over the years to find Ashfield Civic Centre,'' he said. ''I've wandered into people look- ing for citizenship ceremonies out there in the mall, not knowing where to go.'' Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy welcomed the funding boost. ''This is the largest grant ever made available to Ashfield Coun- cil by the Federal Government and it's a major coup for Ashfield Council and the local com- munity,'' he said. Tenders for the redevelopment closed on May 1 and construction is expected to begin in June. The $14.8 million centre will include a new library, customer service centre, and refurbished office space for council staff. Visit www.ashfield.nsw.gov.au or phone 9716 1800.
