20 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, May 14, 2009 MB STREETVIEW Heart art splits opinions Bev Carter Hetal Patel Majed Chilghin Fran Layng Nina Alidenes Cupid's messenger is running around the streets of Summer Hill and sending their love to locals by painting little hearts on the village's walls. We headed down to the crime scene and asked residents and shop-owners if they thought the hearts were merely innocent, charming art or the illicit act of graffiti amateurs, making an allowance for further vandalism. Bev Carter, of Ashfield: For me person- ally, I don't think the hearts make the area look ugly. It could have been a lot worse. It's kind of cute and lovely. At least it's not offensive words or anything. But it also depends on who has done it and if they had permission. You have to ask yourself, does this open up an argument for kids to do other kinds of paintings? They may have made an allowance here. Hetal Patel, of Summer Hill: I think it's just vandalism and it should be removed. I wouldn't like it if someone did it on my wall. Summer Hill is so nice and tidy, but these paintings make the walls look dirty. Majed Chilghin, of Summer Hill: I like the paintings. They look attractive and it's nice to look at . . . it's certainly better than a normal wall. Many people walk past our shop and comment on the hearts, saying they like them too. Fran Layng, of Summer Hill: If it was my property, I'd be very cross. Owners have obviously paid for that wall to be painted and the hearts are just damaging people's property. There are some beautiful murals around Summer Hill that have been done officially and really enhance the area, but these hearts should just be painted over. Nina Alidenes, of Summer Hill: As far as graffiti goes, it's the nicest graffiti we have seen in Summer Hill. The problem is that it may generate more graffiti, that is my only concern. It's lovely and people comment on it, but are we going to come in tomorrow and see a whole wall of hearts? That would just be too much. OPINION MORE GREAT SPECIALS IN STORE!
