FIONA BRADY Just add water Left high and dry by pool closure YOU'VE heard of the pub with no beer. How about the water polo team with no pool? Players from Wests Water Polo Club say they have been left high and dry after Ashfield Council closed their pool at the Ashfield Aquatic Centre. Wests have been based at the 33m pool since 1964. In November the council closed the pool for tile repairs, but Wests members say they were repeatedly assured that the closure was tem- porary. So when councillors voted to close the pool permanently at a budget meeting last month, club president Phil de Gail said it came as a ''huge shock''. ''We have been waiting for six months for the work to start,'' he said. ''The last thing we expected was for the council to close the pool instead of fixing it up.'' But Ashfield Council said the pool would cost too much to repair. ''Unfortunately, the 33m pool is at the end of its useful life and was closed in December due to main- tenance and safety reasons,'' a spokeswoman said. ''Council did initially seek quo- tations on the cost to repair and re- open the pool, and advised Wests Water Polo of this process. ''The cost of repairing the pool ranged from $250,000 to $280,000.
