Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : May 20th 2009
4 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, May 21, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Hair's the styles fit for a winner SHIREEN KHALIL The Australasian College Broadway took out the overall International Hairstylists Society award. OUT-of-control hair designs, creative make-up and wacky costumes is why The Australasian College Broadway got to take home one of the most prestigious hairstyling awards. For the second year running the college won the the International Hairstylists Society title last week at Burwood RSL, with a performance based on music icon Grace Jones. The competition, which saw four hairdressing colleges compete before 600 people, aims to identify the best students within the industry. About 30 students from the Australasian College put their tools to the test and amazed the seven judges and audience with looks made famous by Grace Jones, including a sexy seductress, a cheetah, and the robo half-man half-woman looks. College CEO and Drummoyne resident Maureen Houssein- Mustafa said it took the students six months to create the winning performance. ''It took months because you have to get a theme together, the hair and make-up needs practising and you have to organise dancers who were choreographed by Kirby Burgess, and to see it all come together so professionally in front of a roaring crowd was just magical to witness,'' she said. Director of Battle of the Colleges Peter Elchaar said the level of competition was simply outstanding. 'Feel-good' tags given brush-off FIONA BRADY Another message about the hearts from Michelle Sinclair. Was the council heavy-handed? www.innerwestweekly.com.au LAST week we reported how an eye-catching heart-shaped graffiti tag in Summer Hill had won the hearts of some local residents. But the day our paper hit the streets, Ashfield Council's clean team did too -- and removed all the tags. The council clean-up has infuri- ated local businesswoman Michelle Sinclair whose property at 111 Smith St had one of the tags. ''A couple of weeks before the story came out, they'd asked me if I wanted it painted over and I said no,'' she said. ''Then last week they came back and did it anyway.'' The director of Tantrum Adver- tising said council officers hadn't asked for her permission to carry out the work -- and they had painted the wall with the wrong colour. ''They have now made this wall an eyesore,'' she wrote in a protest sign which council staff also painted over. Ms Sinclair said she had liked the tag because it was a ''feel-good sign'' but nearby ''filthy, ugly'' graffiti had not been touched. An Ashfield Council spokes- woman said: ''While council understands this property owner's concerns, Ashfield Council cur- rently employs a zero-tolerance policy on graffiti, which is why the hearts on the property at Summer Hill were removed. ''Council was acting in accord- ance with the Graffiti Control Act which allows council to remove graffiti on private property, where it can be reached from public land, without the owner's permission. ''However as a courtesy, council does notify owners in advance.'' Authorised by the Australian Government, Capital Hill, Canberra Advertisement Stimulus plan Tax bonus payments Where is my payment?
