They might be a bunch of old rockers, but members of the lapi- dary club put in a polished effort at the Ray Powell competition in Horsham, Victoria, over Easter. The club, which specialises in cutting and polishing stones, won the champion club trophy for creating some outstanding pieces of jewellery. The Concord West club was among 2500 entries in a range of jewellery categories and collected a total of 46 medals, with Shirley Flynn, Ainslee Flyyn, Caroline Kollman and Norma Alce taking home championship shield awards. The catalyst behind the award was Marcia Hill, who mentored the 11 members with entries. ''We are proud as punch for winning the competition -- it means recognition among other clubs,'' she said. Mrs Hill, who has been with the club for 25 years and is a five-time NSW lapidary champion, travels as far as Arizona in America to collect stones for the club. ''I bring a lot of the good materials back and share them with the club and I'm fortunate that they have them in Arizona as that's where the biggest gems and materials are from,'' Mrs Hill said. The club has all the necessary equipment to cut and polish all types of stones and have introductory classes for those who want to be a lapidary. Mrs Hill spends about 40 hours a week making jewellery for compe- titions and said one of the best stones is agate, which is a precious stone full of colour. ''It was one of the first stones I evercutanditcanbecutinso many different ways and the fin- ished product always looks so good.'' President William Ray de- scribed the club as being a play group for seniors, where members have fun and learn the art of making jewellery. To become a member, phone Mr Ray on 9798 7728. Thrilled to sell the big one A STRATHFIELD Plaza newsagency sold the $1 million first division prize in Monday night's Lotto. The winning ticket was a single entry bought by a mem- ber of the NSW Players Club. As we went to press, NSW lotteries officials were still try- ing to contact the winner to inform them of their windfall. ''I'm very excited about sell- ing a winning ticket,'' part- owner Ramesh Sethurao said. ''In fact we are all thrilled here at the shop. ''My partners and I only took over the shop two months ago and already we've made some- one a millionaire, its almost unbelievable.''
