Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : May 27th 2009
MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, May 28, 2009 15 Carbon-free upgrade Road waste recycled for oval carpark Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas and Manoj Kumar, the council's maintenance and construction manager, survey the work at Ron Routley Oval car park. A CAR park in Canada Bay is being upgraded using materials that would have otherwise been sent to landfill. Canada Bay Council has completely re-sheeted the Ron Routley Oval car park, located behind Concord RSL, using 4000 tonnes of materials taken from roads being replaced around the city. ''Road waste that would have been traditionally sent to landfill is now being used to renew a car park that was in need of repair,'' Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said. ''Not only does this save council from having to purchase new material, it saves the cost of having to transport the material to landfill, the greenhouse gas emissions this would have produced, and the cost to dispose the materials. ''This is a fantastic example of the ways in which council is working toward Canada Bay being a sustainable and environmentally-friendly city.'' Cyclists to ride around the bay and into the city CYCLING enthusiasts in the Inner West will soon be able to explore new paths as Burwood Council completes a new cycleway between Lucas Rd, Cheltenham Rd and Parramatta Rd. The cycleway connects Burwood to the Canada Bay bike track allowing cyclists to travel along the whole bay and into the city. ''This new cycleway is a valuable asset for the community as not only does it improve the safety of cyclists but it also encourages residents to choose bikes as a greener and healthier form of transport, therefore reducing traffic congestion and pollution,'' Burwood Mayor Lesley Furneaux-Cook said. Burwood Council also plans to install extra solar powered lights along the foreshore strip of the Cooks River by December. Twelve more lights timed to turn on at dusk, will be added to the 1km stretch between Walsh Avenue Reserve and Flockhart Park. The council received a grant of about $40,000 from the Metropolitan Green Space Program to complete the project. Work is expected to start in early October.
