MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 4, 2009 7 NEWS www.innerwestweekly.com.au Adventure ride full of hope SHANNON ANDREUCCI See more pictures More photographs available at www.innerwestweekly.com.au Women who survived breast cancer reunite at Fraser's Motorcycles after riding their Harley Davidsons from Brisbane to Sydney. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~P0642461 AFTER the escalation of bikie gang violence and society's disap- proval of such groups, comes a big- hearted motorcycle club focused on charity, hope and support. They call themselves Amazon Heart Thunder, a group of inter- national breast cancer survivors who recently challenged them- selves to complete a 10-day charity Harley Davidson motorcycle trip from Brisbane to Sydney. Last Friday the Fraser Motor- cycles store in Concord welcomed the 39 brave women for an after- noon tea to celebrate the com- pletion of their journey and re- unite them with their proud family, friends and supporters. ''We just spent a week riding through the floods, detours and landslides to get here and the women have had a life-changing experience and also raised $90,000 for breast cancer research,'' Ama- zon Heart co-founder Meredith Campbell said. Amazon Heart is an inter- national organisation founded in 2004, which runs peer support adventures around the world to help increase awareness of breast cancer and raise funds to strengthen the fight against it. ''While going through the physi- cal treatment of breast cancer is really difficult, it's making sense of the emotional aftermath that's even harder and the only people who can really help you with that are those who have also been through it,'' Meredith said. One member, Robyn, is glad she found Amazon Heart as it encour- aged her to ride her Harley again. ''I bought one and it just sat in my garage for eight months be- cause I couldn't ride due to my cancer treatment but when the time was right I got the bike out and I actually rode to Brisbane on my own to meet up with the group and rode back,'' she said. ''It was truly a phenomenal ride.'' BRIEFLY Sale postponed THE sale of a Five Dock Masonic lodge has been postponed. The Inner-West Weekly reported last week that the Chelmsford Lodge on First Ave was being auctioned on Saturday, June 20. But Lodge secretary Alan Ligertwood said this week that while the sale was still going ahead, it had been delayed ''for procedural reasons''. The lodge's garage sale is still on this Sunday from 10am to 3pm. Books, crockery, chairs and other bric-a- bric will be for sale. Four-year plan LAWS to promote better financial management and long-term planning by councils are being considered by the State Government. Local Government Minister Barbara Perry said the laws would require councils to prove community support for proposed infrastructure. A four-year plan to show how projects would be delivered in a council's term would be required, Ms Perry said. Feedback on the draft legislation, Integrated Planning and Reporting Framework, closes Friday, June 12.
