Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : June 3rd 2009
24 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 4, 2009 MB Cemetery walk a step back in time LEARN about Australian history by going on a tour of Rookwood Cemetery. On Sunday, June 7, Friends of Rookwood will be hosting two guided tours in the cemetery. The Ships and Shipwrecks tour looks at some of the journeys made to Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At a time when one ship a week was lost in Australian waters, hundreds of thousands of convicts and immigrants made the hazardous voyage here. Headstones at Rookwood bring to mind some of these journeys and disasters. Names of famous and less well-known wrecks are recorded on many family monuments, eg Barrabool, Dunbar, Sydney Cove and Ly-ee Moon. The second tour is a heritage walk tour in the old Anglican and Catholic parts of the cemetery. Hear the stories about some of the famous residents and interesting people buried in the cemetery. Tours cost $12 per person. For details and bookings, phone 9889 3899. Alive Dance it up 25 Sculptors win 'unique' site Rookwood Necropolis is hosting an exhibition of sculpture. DETAILS: Visit www.rook woodcemetery.com.au SYDNEY'S biggest cemetery, Rookwood Necropolis, has become a temporary art gallery. An outdoor sculpture walk, featuring the work of 16 artists, opened last month outside the cemetery's new cafe, Reflections at Rookwood. The walk was the brainchild of Rookwood's Anglican and General Cemetery Trusts. ''What better way to support our local artists than by giving them a chance to have their works displayed in such a unique, and for many of our artists, personal, setting,'' Trusts general manager Derek Williams said. The project's curator, David Capra, hopes the walk will bring new visitors to Rookwood. ''This is a very important project as it allows artists to investigate what Rookwood means to them and gives artists the opportunity to place their work within a deeper and more meaningful context. ''It also gives the public the opportunity to explore with them.'' Emerging artists Matt Rochford and Jacqueline Olivetti installed a soundscape titled Time Management. ''For the contemporary human, time is compartmentalised into minutes and seconds, via rosters, schedules and appointments,'' Rochford said. ''This work is about coming to terms with time with its restrictions and possibilities. ''Make time, save time, use time, lose time.''
