6 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 11, 2009 MB QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY HONOURS LIST www.innerwestweekly.com.au Pioneering nun chalks up a medal FIONA BRADY Sister Judith Lawson at Santa Sabina, Strathfield, has been awarded an OAM. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~P0643009 Sister Judith retired from the college in grand style. A PIONEERING former principal of Santa Sabina College in Strathfield has been included on the Queen's Birthday Honours list. Sister Judith Lawson was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Monday. The modest nun said the award was a tribute to the whole school community and to the work the Dominican Sisters have done in the area since 1894. ''It's a wonderful honour and I'm touched by the support of those who put forward my name,'' she said. A Santa Sabina pupil herself in the 1950s, Sr Judith taught at several local schools before taking up a post as a Santa Sabina's religious education co-ordinator in 1982. Five years later she was ap- pointed principal. As career highlights, she nomi- nated the school's centenary cel- ebrations in 1994 and the estab- lishment of a childcare centre for staff 10 years ago. ''It was clear to us that we were losing young, keen, good teachers because of the need for childcare in the area, it was quite difficult to find,'' she said. To stop the staff exodus, she helped establish Mary Bailey House childcare centre on the primary school campus -- a move that earned Santa Sabina accol- ades from equal opportunity agencies. Sr Judith retired in 2007 and now works for her order in a liaison role with Dominican schools. She agreed that Santa Sabina would always occupy a special place in her heart. ''Yes it will, a lot of my life has been caught up with the school,'' she said. Award is sign of dedication A STRATHFIELD man has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the community, particularly to Rotary International and the sign-writing industry.
