Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : June 10th 2009
12 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 11, 2009 MB NEWS Career SCOTT HOWLETT A CHINESE national who came to Australia to study has fallen in love with her new island home and is completing her sea- going training in Western Australia as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy. Becky Shao, of Five Dock, is a living example of how unexpected life can be. ''I expected to come to Australia to study and then go back to China,'' Sub Lieutenant Shao said from HMAS Arunta. ''I discussed it with my family in China, and they agreed I should go for it. ''In fact, my sister is now here too, along with my husband.'' Ms Shao joined the navy after completing a degree at Sydney University. ''I've finished my officer training and I see the navy as a long-term career,'' Ms Shao said. ''As a supply officer I'll certainly be using my logistics degree.'' Supply officers maintain equipment and supplies, from food and fuel to medical equipment, for every department aboard. ''We also manage the ship's ceremonies like Anzac Day, so April was pretty busy,'' Ms Shao said. ''The navy hasn't sent me overseas yet but we are expecting to deploy to south-east Asia in the middle of the year -- not long to go.
