18 INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 11, 2009 MB Talk to us at allofaus.com.au All together now Sally Fitzgibbons, professional surfer says the Aussie spirit is 'the sense of community, the sense of freedom and choice' Picture: Steve Robertson Values are reinterpreted, diversity is key and a self assured spirit asserts itself on AllofAus.com.au AUSTRALIA has spoken and continues to discuss, engage and debate the question, What makes our country great?, on the interactive website allofaus.com.au. Brought to you by Qantas, and supported by News Limited, allofaus.com.au aims to discover what defines our country to find out what makes Australia special in 2009. Already after one week certain themes are asserting themselves. Social researcher Mark McCrindle, who is monitoring the site, has been impressed with the considered responses and the generational and cultural diversity of the participants who have engaged in conver- sations on topics as diverse as food, the beach, the arts, love, home and sport. ''People have moved away from cliche,'' says McCrindle. ''They're proudly Aust- ralian but there's also a realism. We're seeing how traditional iconic values such as mateship and the outback are being reinterpreted. We're not cringing from these themes but there's a sophistication in the 21st century as to how we value them.'' McCrindle has also noticed how issues that used to be seen as weaknesses such as Australia's isolation are now being em- braced as strengths.
