Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP285209 ASHFIELD might not have a reputation as an ''arty suburb'' like Newtown or Balmain -- but that could be about to change. Under the auspices of Ashfield Council, a group of local artists have banded together to promote art in the area. The 14-strong Artists @ Ashfield group meet once a month in the historic Thirning Villa, next to Pratten Park. The organisation is open to everyone -- from full-time artists, to keen amateurs and even arts enthusiasts who'd never dream of picking up a paintbrush. One of the members is Cathy Abadie, a French-born painter and illustrator who's lived in Ashfield since 2000. She sees the regular meetings with other artists as a great anecdote to artistic loneliness. ''Artists work in isolation so often so it's wonderful to be able to share and talk about our works,'' she said. The group's second exhibition opens in Thirning Villa this week. Paintings, prints, sculpture, jewellery and crafts will be on exhibition and for sale. Abadie is hoping people will support their local artistic community. ''It's good quality and affordable,'' she said of the artwork. In the future the artists plan to start their own own website and open a permanent gallery. ''It is good for the area,'' Abadie said. ''Art brings everyone together.''
