MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, June 18, 2009 13 NEWS Heart in right place Women turn out in red at Concord Hospital. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~P0643803 FIVE STEPS TO A HEALTHY HEART Visit your GP for regular heart check-ups Check your cholesterol level, blood pressure, and waist circumference regularly Give up smoking Enjoy a healthy diet Be active every day STAFF and patients at Concord Hospital proved they had big hearts last Friday when they wore red to highlight the dangers of heart disease for women. About 50 women joined in the Heart Foundation's Go Red for Women campaign on the hospital green. Drummoyne State Labor MP Angela D'Amore was among them. She said heart disease claimed the lives of 30 women every day -- more than four times as many women as breast cancer. ''When women juggle working with their family life, they sometimes put their own health care to the side,'' she said. ''This needs to change today.'' Cardiology director Prof Len Kritharides said there was a misconception that heart disease only affects the elderly. ''Heart disease can affect anyone, male or female at any age,'' he said. ''Often there are no symptoms of heart disease. Women most at risk are those with a family history of heart disease or those who smoke, have high blood pressure or cholesterol, have diabetes, suffer from depression and are physically inactive or overweight.''
