Herbs such as sage, black cohosh, dong quai and wild yam have been used for centuries by menopausal women. However, it's important that you get professional advice from a herbalist or naturopath and don't self prescribe these herbs, as you will get greatest benefit from a formula that's tailor-made for your individual needs. There are also many other things you can do to help you cope with the symptoms of menopause: To avoid hot flushes: Cut down on alcohol and coffee -- limit yourself to just one glass of alcohol and one cup of coffee each day. Go easy on chocolate. To minimise overnight sweats, don't drink wine at dinner. Also avoid any foods which are served very hot or very cold, as that can produce a flush or sudden rush of sweat. Spicy food can also trigger flushes for some women. Wear layered clothing and natural fabrics are best. Look out for the stress--inducing emotions. Anger, fear, nerves and anxiety will all intensify any menopause symptoms. Menopause is a time of reflection for women, sadly we don't make the time in our es to do that. Menopause makes us respect our needs, or suffer from their neglect. So take the time for self care -- do the things you love to do, have a regular massage, facial, get out in the garden, whatever makes you feel good. Eat foods that are high in plant oestrogens such as soy, alfalfa, linseed and the yam family. Have two tablespoons of ground linseeds on your cereal every day. Also eat foods which are good sources of protein (egg, fish, chicken, lentils, chickpeas) and anti-oxidants (five serves of vegies and two serves of fruit each day). Pump some iron. It is essential to maintain and build your muscles as you go through menopause. It will keep your bones strong as well as regulate your weight and give you more energy. Workout with weights three times a week for 30 minutes each time. Don't forget the calcium. As your oestrogen levels drop during menopause, you are at greater risk of osteoporosis. Make sure you include lots of calcium-rich foods in your diet such as almonds, sardines, salmon, sesame seeds, tahini, and dairy products. Also get out in the sun to boost your Vitamin D. Ten minutes of sun exposure is all you need each day. If you would like help managing your menopausal symptoms call naturopath Susan Garrad at Women's Health, Naturally on 9798 9322. Q.
