Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : June 24th 2009
www.innerwestweekly.com.au THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2009 PHONE 9018 3592 80c incl. GST Rats in our ranks SHIREEN KHALIL CALLING the Pied Piper. Five Dock needs you. Shoppers and workers have been greeted by dead rats on footpaths and in gutters around the shopping strip over the past few months. Business owners on Great North Rd say the area has always been the centre of a ''rat-run''. The Inner-West Weekly tallied five large, dead rats in recent weeks, which were infested with flies and smelt putrid. But 3Punte Caffe owner Louisa Ianni said that toll was nothing compared with the number of live rats her husband sees in the laneway outside the shop every morning before opening. She said rats had always been an issue in the area and something needed to be done about it. ''In the morning they are all at the back lanes, behind our business, and my husband sees so many of them,'' Mrs Ianni said. ''This is the area for them, they come from the bays which is full of them. It's always been a problem in Five Dock. ''It's council's job to do something about it.'' A Canada Bay Council spokeswoman said it was up to property owners to remove the dead rats. ''Council is not carrying out an eradication program,'' she said. ''Removal of dead rats is the responsibility of the property owner on whose land they are on. ''However if they are in council's parks or on public land council will organise for their removal.'' The spokeswoman said the council had not been made aware of rats around Five Dock, and that they were probably common rats, not water rats. ''It is not uncommon, however, for rats and mice to be prevalent after periods of heavy rain, as nesting areas along stormwater drains become filled with rainwater.'' To Page 2 A group of rats is called a mischief They live everywhere people do They have a territory of 30m to 100m, which they explore daily It is estimated that rats destroy one-fifth of the food produced every year Rats can't vomit (which may explain their putrid smell when they're dead) Rats can complete the whole romantic relationship in about two seconds The roof rat (Rattus rattus) and the norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) are the main types Water rats swim early or late in the day
