MB INNER-WEST WEEKLY, Thursday, July 2, 2009 21 Composer at celebration STRATHFIELD Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday night with a huge concert featuring a specially commissioned work by one of Australia's favourite composers, Elena Kats-Chernin. Kats-Chernin will also play the piano for the world premiere of the Redmyre Suite. ''We are so proud to be presenting such a wonderful new piece of music created by an astonishing Australian composer,'' said the orchestra's artistic director and chief conductor Sarah-Grace Williams. ''She is a sensational talent and will set the scene for what is arguably our biggest concert yet.'' Original manuscript sketches of the Redmyre Suite, signed by Kats- Chernin and professionally framed, will also be sold on the night. Other music will be Gershwin's joyous Cuban Overture, the Grieg Piano Concerto, and the famous 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky. The concert is at Petersham Town Hall at 8pm on Saturday. Gary Corsello, an Italian-American singer and reputedly one of the world's best Sinatra impersonators, will be at Burwood RSL Club on Sunday, July 12 for The Ultimate Event. Corsello has been impersonating his idol Sinatra for more than 30 years. ''I have a genuine passion for Sinatra, he is in my DNA,'' Corsello, 53, said. ''As a kid it was Frank this, Frank that and by the time I was seven I started listening and singing to his records but I didn't think I would be a Frank impersonator.'' Any Sinatra fan will know that The Ultimate Event consisted of the man himself, along with Liza Minnelli and the much-loved Sammy Davis Jr. It showcased the outstanding talents of these three great performers and was one of the most popular and financially successful shows of its type. Joining Corsello is the number one Liza Minnelli impersonator in the US, Suzanne Goulet, and Nicholas Brooks as Sammy Davis Jnr. Corsello who owns a extensive array of Sinatra memorabilia, spends hours studying the artist each day. ''People tell me I got a lot of guts trying to do Sinatra and it's not easy trying to be Sinatra -- I study him as close as I can by watching his concerts and forever learning new songs and finding ways to better myself.'' The Sinatra impersonator came to Australia in 2002 for the Rat Pack tour and says he is honoured to be back for The Ultimate Event, which they have been rehearsing for months. But the highlight of Corsello's musical career was when he got to meet the man himself. ''I met him in 1975. I was in the right place at the right time -- he walked in my direction and I was standing with my girlfriend who was cute as a button and he noticed her and I shook his hand. He said 'How you doin?' and pinches my girlfriend's cheeks and said 'Hey cutie' -- I don't think she ever washed her face after that,'' Corsello said. The Ultimate Event is a 90-minute show that combines great singing, dancing, and witty dialogue, and features more than 30 memorable songs.
