INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 9, 2009 5 www.innerwestcourier.com.au NEWS Sods turn on $15m building Fiona Brady What else can be done to spruce up Liverpool Rd? Tell us at innerwestcourier.com.au Ken Gainger, Ted Cassidy and Anthony Albanese turn the first sod on Ashfield's town centre council buildings. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ASHFIELD'S town centre will soon be a hive of construction activity. After two years of planning, work is beginning on the $15 million new-look council centre at 260 Liverpool Rd. Of course, no major project can get under way without a pollie in a hard hat to turn the first sod, and on Monday, Grayndler Federal Labor MP Anthony Albanese did the honours -- with a little help from Ashfield Mayor Ted Cassidy and general manager Ken Gainger. The redevelopment received $2.3 million from the Federal Gov- ernment's economic stimulus plan. Mr Albanese claims it will cushion the impact of the global recession in the area. ''During construction, this proj- ect will support jobs locally, and will continue to support jobs through ongoing maintenance and services,'' he said. Cr Cassidy said the centre of Ashfield would be transformed. ''Our new council centre will be a modern, accessible and community-oriented centre that will meet the needs of our resi- dents and community members now and into the future,'' he said. It will include a library, cus- tomer service centre and refur- bished office accommodation. The Federal Government's con- tribution will be used to fund a youth resource centre and early childhood health centre. ''We will keep our community informed of our progress during the life of the project,'' Cr Cassidy promised. For more information about the redevelopment, go to www.ashfield.nsw.gov.au or phone 9716 1800. State funds Strathfield high s lab STRATHFIELD South High School is about to receive over $1.08 million for an upgrade of its science facilities. Strathfield State Labor MP Virginia Judge said the funding was part of the State Govern- ment's $1 billion Science and Language Centres for 21st Century Schools program. ''I am delighted that Strathfield South High School will receive this important infrastructure boost,'' Ms Judge said. ''This investment will provide the school with a purpose-built science centre for students and teachers.'' Ms Judge said the facilities would have state-of-the-art tech- nology to vastly improve science teaching and learning at the school. ''I am delighted that Strathfield schools are benefiting from this unprecedented investment,'' she said. ''The Rees Government has hit the ground running in delivering one of the biggest school infra- structure packages in NSW his- tory. ''Public schools across the state will receive their share of $3.2 billion worth of projects through the Rudd Government's $14.7 billion Building the Education Revolution package.'' Ms Judge said the funding to NSW schools was on top of the record spending to public school capital works and maintenance by the Rees Government.
