10 INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 9, 2009 NEWS www.innerwestcourier.com.au Whackers pack a lifesaving punch MP Virginia Judge inspects the new defibrillator at Strathfield railway station with station master Neville Roffe and Charlotte Waddy. THE power to save someone suffering a cardiac arrest can now be in anyone's hands. This was the message delivered by Strathfield MP Virginia Judge when she inspected the new defibrillator at Strathfield railway station last Friday. The automated external defibrillator pro- vides screen and voice instructions to guide people through using the device on someone suffering cardiac arrest. Accompanied by station master Neville Roff, Ms Judge praised the installation of the device, which she said had saved lives. ''These defibrillators can make a real difference in saving the lives of people who have suffered a cardiac arrest,'' Ms Judge said. ''While defibrillators are common on commercial aircraft and in airports, this is the first time that they've been rolled out across a public transport network on such a large scale,'' she said. The defibrillator is one of the first monitored defibrillators to be installed at a railway station in Australia. ''We're one of the first to have it. There's also one at Town Hall and Central, with more on the way,'' Mr Roff said. ''All of the staff here has been trained to use the defibrillator.'' council chambers: 65 Homebush Rd, Strathfield NSW 2135 P: 9748 9999 F: 9764 1034 postal address: PO Box 120, Strathfield NSW 2135 business hours: 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday STRATHFIELD COUNCIL WHAT'S ON Clean Energy Seminar 29 July EnergyAustralia presents guest speaker Dr Mark Diesendorf 6pm-9pm FREE Energy Efficiency Centre Unit 12/11-21 Underwood Road, Homebush Storytime at the Library Pre-School 2-5years Second Wed of the month 10.30am-11.30am Strathfield Main Library 65-67 Rochester St, Homebush E: firstname.lastname@example.org W: www.strathfield.nsw.gov.au 2166382i iww wk2 First Tuesday of the Month - Ordinary Council at 7pm, Council Chambers 65 Homebush Road Strathfield Second Tuesday of the Month - Planning Committee at 6pm Iron Bark meeting room Strathfield Library and Information Centre 65-67 Rochester Street Homebush Third Tuesday of the Month - As required • Environmental Committee • Social Committee • Economic Committee Business papers for Council and Committee meetings are available from Council's Customer Service Centre, libraries and website www.strathfield.nsw.gov.au from the Saturday prior to each meeting.
