20 INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 9, 2009 MB Opinion innerwestcourier.com.au YOUR SAY Send letters to: Letters, Inner West Courier, 181 First Ave, Five Dock 2046 . . . please use your common sense and hire the man with the eagle - Sandra Smith One of the pigeons in Summer Hill. Hawks and eagles v pigeons Eagle Sabrina is a formidable sight, especially for pigeons and other birds, according to reports in Victoria ( Birds on a Wire'', July 2). The 4.5kg wedge-tailed eagle, and some of her smaller but faster hawk and peregrine falcon friends, may be the latest weapons to minimise bird strikes at Melbourne Airport and control bird pests, The Age reported earlier this year. Graeme Coles hopes his birds will be used to scare nuisance birds at airports, and to protect historic buildings and crops. Mr Coles said the US Airways crash in New York in January, triggered by a bird strike, high- lighted the need for other non-lethal'' methods to be explored. It's a natural prey-predator response,'' Mr Coles was reported as saying. Say pigeons are on a runway, for example, introducing a falcon to the equation is their natural predator. They see their natural predator and they vacate the area. They don't know the falcon's not going to kill them.'' This is information for all the Summer Hill shops that seem to want to kill birds who are obviously being fed by someone there, otherwise they would not be there. The answer: instead of killing anything that you don't want, please use your common sense and hire the man with the eagle. It won't be long before you don't see any birds at all in your area. Sandra Smith Concord Thank you for volunteers dinner Thanks to Strathfield Council for the volunteers dinner on June 25. We dined with live music in the background, met friends old and new and took part in a trivia game. One of the many questions was - what is the name of the endangered species of frog that is found in the Strathfield municipality? It's the green and golden bell frog. It was a fun-filled function at the Town Hall. Gladys Lim Strathfield They're louts not fans FANS escorted from a State of Origin game (Opinion, July 2). Why are they called fans? They should be called what they really are: louts, ratbags, troublemakers, spoilsports etc, certainly not fans. The fans try and enjoy the game and behave properly.
