MB INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 16, 2009 33 Young composers teaming up with The Song Company at the Forum in Leichhardt on Sunday. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP297040 Will Modart find an Omar Hanwi Mozart? Australian '' Modart . . . offers a rare occasion for talented young composers to collaborate with professional musicians LEICHHARDT will host Aust- ralia's leading vocal ensemble when Modart 2009 charms audi- ences at the Italian Forum Cul- tural Centre on Sunday. Co-ordinated by The Song Com- pany, the event will present pieces from a group of young composers who developed their pieces in workshops conducted by the com- pany. Melody Eotvos, 24, is a Brisbane pianist who trekked to Sydney for the workshops. ''This is for emerging composers like us to be in a workshop situation, to experiment and work one on one with each other,'' Eotvos said. She added that the ensemble gave the composers an oppor- tunity to stretch their abilities to new limits. ''It's really a perfect way to hone your writing skills,'' she said. She will be joined by her class- mate Anthony Dunftan, 27, a french horn player who used his creative writing background and studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to great effect in the workshops. ''It's been fascinating writing for specific voice types. Certain voices create their atmosphere and it's great to work with that,'' Dunftan said. The performance represents the climax of Modart 2009, a pro- fessional development project pro- viding opportunities for emerging composers. ''Modart is a project that's very dear to my heart as it offers a rare occasion for talented young composers to collaborate with pro- fessional musicians outside the walls of the classroom or conservatorium,'' artistic director Roland Peelman said. Seven Australians and composers from New Zealand and Hong Kong were selected to spend two intensive working periods with the director and singers of The Song Company this year. ''Over the two working periods, we can really develop a creative relationship,'' Peelman said.
