4 INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 23, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestcourier.com.au Olympic Park gets the chop Fiona Brady Trees being cut down in Kevin Coombs and Australia avenues, Sydney Olympic Park, to make way for the V8 track. Picture: PHIL BLATCH ~PP299254 ANGRY protesters say prep- arations for the V8 Supercar race are ravaging Sydney Olympic Park after 140 mature trees were cut down on Monday. The bulk of the trees were removed from the median strip of Australia Ave, while a few were felled in Kevin Coombs and Edwin Flack avenues. Manchurian pear trees are also to be removed from Dawn Fraser and Murray Rose avenues. Tom Bohan from the Save Olympic Park No V8 committee said the tree-felling undermined the park's reputation as showcase of environmental sustainability. ''I think it is a devastation,'' the Newington resident said. ''They won't replace these trees in the same place. It undermines the landscaping integrity of the site.'' Homebush Motor Racing Auth- ority CEO Bryan Hardman said the trees were removed for safety reasons, but V8 Supercars had agreed on a tree replacement program with the Sydney Olympic Park Authority. ''It is unfortunate they have to be removed, but we are replacing them at a rate of three to one,'' he said. Planting would start in Bicen- tennial Park next week and SOPA was being consulted about what should replace the trees on the median strip, he said. ''All works are being carried out by arboricultural and horti- cultural experts,'' he said. Mr Bohan said there had been no consultation about the work. Mr Hardman said the timetable for the works and the traffic management plan were on view at the SOPA reception. Tigers offer $100k fee in sponsor hunt Kate Carr Who would you like to see sponsor the Tigers? Tell us at innerwestcourier.com.au WESTS Tigers are on the prowl for a new major sponsor, and are prepared to dish up the big bickies to anyone who can help them secure one before the end of July. In the mad dash to the finish line you might expect from the Tigers in September, rather than halfway through the year, the team has announced it will give $100,000 to anyone who can help ink the team a major sponsorship deal for the 2010 season. ''Proton's agreement comes to an end this year, and we are testing the market,'' Wests Tigers general manager sales and mar- keting Brett Clarke said. The finder's fee is 10 per cent of the cost of the team's first year sponsorship deal, plus a bonus. ''We are after $950,000, but if we get it before July 31 we'll pay that bit extra,'' Mr Clarke said. Although the call was originally issued to marketing companies, Mr Clarke said the team would pay the fee to anyone who was able to line up a deal. ''We hope that there are some Tigers fans who know some people in business, and hopefully will lead them towards us,'' he said. ''If someone came to us with a deal they could get over the line. We'd definitely look at paying them a commission.'' He said the incentive was not a sign the team was in trouble. ''It's a sign of strength if any- thing,'' he said. ''My phone has been ringing off the hook.'' Mr Clarke said the offer wasn't the death knell to the team's relationship with Proton. ''Proton have the last rights on the contract,'' he said. ''It is up to them whether they can match that offer. ''Proton said to us we should feel free to test the market and we're speaking to quite a few companies at the moment. We are really looking at the big brands here.'' A Proton spokesman said the company was unaware of the finder's fee. UD Trucks' three-year jersey deal expires at the end of next season.
