MB INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 23, 2009 11 www.innerwestcourier.com.au NEWS Funny? It's a Ruddy riot Marie Sansom Kevin Rudd'' (comedian Anthony Ackroyd) ar- rives in a ute for the launch of the World's Funniest Island. Picture: DANNY AARONS ~PP299289 IT used to echo to the sound of prisoners groaning as they were flogged. But in October, Cockatoo Island will reverberate to the sound of uncontrollable laughter. The World's Funniest Island, a two-day festival organised by com- edy guru John Pinder, is set to rock the island. Pinder, famed director of com- edy festivals in Sydney and Mel- bourne, has put together a bill he describes as ''young guns and elder statesmen''. When Pinder approached British comedian Alexei Sayle's agent, he was told Sayle was done with the stand-up circuit. But the wily festival director lured the comedian with the promise of two shows -- one of reminisces from his Young Ones and Comic Strip days, the other reading from his comic novels. He has also secured peren- nial favourites The Goodies, Merrick and Rosso, Scared Little Weird Guys and Heath Franklin's Chopper. But the accent isn't all on the big names. The festival will include some edgy new comics who make Pinder's eyes light up when he talks about them: Jacques Barrett, Felicity Ward and Tom Ballard. He is enthusiastic about other parts of the festival too, including a student revue, burlesque art classes, sketch shows and music comedy. He chose the island because of its different spaces and buildings. ''There's got to be dark and gloomy little venues that people can convert into magical places,'' he said. ''I went to Cockatoo and just went Bingo! That's the place.'' He knew from the start he wanted to pack everything into a weekend. ''Sydney is a city that says I want it now, I want it all, I want it to be completely different to any- thing else before, and I want it all to be over in a weekend.''
