Inner Western Courier Thursday Not Used Anymore : July 23rd 2009
14 INNER WEST COURIER, Thursday, July 23, 2009 MB NEWS www.innerwestcourier.com.au There's glamour in grease Trainers from the Galmatic Car Care workshops. Shireen Khalil LADIES, unless you know a Samson with a socket set or a Hercules with a hex wrench, it may be time to pop the bonnet and face your fears. While the majority of women don't have an interest in cars, it's important to be educated, and that's why the Galmatic Car Care workshop is rolling back into town. Galmatic founder Eleni Mitakos said the July workshop at Bob Jane T-mart in Haberfield was so successful they would bring it back in August. Ms Mitakos said Inner West women had a real interest in educating themselves about one of their biggest investments. ''Our two-hour workshops teach women the basic steps on how a car works: going through what's under the bonnet and also how to change a tyre, how to check the oil and also how to save money,'' Ms Mitakos said. The former ballroom dancing teacher grew up in a family of mechanics but could never find the information she needed when she had car trouble of her own. ''My first car was a 1956 FE Holden. I've always had an interest in old cars and whenever I looked for information or when I needed to fix my cars I could never find anything,'' she said. Ms Mitakos slowly built her automotive knowledge by speak- ing to industry professionals. ''I don't want to turn girls into mechanics but build their know- ledge of cars.'' The workshops, which are taught by qualified female trainers, are practical, fun and informative. Ms Mitakos, a corporate trainer of 15 years, said most women who participated in her workshops had never changed a tyre. ''Women end up taking away the confidence to look under their bonnet and learn to do a few things to maintain the value and life of their vehicle,'' she said.
