Ashfield’s roads to ruin Fiona Brady UNSIGHTLY buildings on prime sites in Ashfield are in the council’s firing line. Last week Ashfield councillors voted to write to the owners of three properties, asking them what their plans are for their sites. The toughest talking was re- served for the owners of the former Brescia showroom and warehouse on Parramatta Rd, which was gutted by an accidental fire in March, 2005. The council has threatened that if there are no immediate plans to demolish the building, it will send in the bulldozers itself. Mayor Ted Cassidy said hun- dreds of thousands of people drove past it every day and it was an embarrassment to the council. ‘‘It is time something was done about it,’’ he said. But the Brescia family say they intend to lodge a development application for the site very soon. Vittorio Brescia said the delay had been caused by a 21 /2 -year legal battle with their insurer. Further delays were caused when part of the land was used to build a pedestrian bridge, he said. The family hopes to salvage part of the building to use as a new WHAT DRIVES YOU? The second building in the coun- cil’s sights is the dilapidated row of shops at the corner of Elizabeth St and Liverpool Rd. Cr Cassidy said he’d had complaints about squatters using the RTA-owned building. ‘‘It is unsafe and is probably a fire hazard,’’ he said. A RTA spokesman said it was finalising its plans for the building and demolition was an option. The third building to come under the council’s radar was the car workshop at Liverpool Rd and Turn your passions into profit With the Australian College of Journalism, you can learn how to write and sell children’s stories, perfect your proofreading skills or find out what it takes to become a successful freelance travel writer or photographer. Cr Cassidy said it was probably one of the first purpose-built service stations in Sydney. ‘‘I wouldn’t like to see it demol- ished; I would like to see it tidied up,’’ he said. Owner Letterio Giliberto said the council was being unfair. He said he cleaned the site every day and had hired a gardener to tend the plants. He said the council had not been specific about what else they wanted him to do. Are there other eyesores that need cleaning up?
