Picture: SIMON CHILLINGWORTH ~PP301692 Hospital staff oppose cuts Fiona Brady MORE than 100 Concord Hospital staff stopped work for two hours on Tuesday to protest over feared job cuts and privatisation of nonclinical hospital services. The Health Services Union, which organised the rally, claimed 3500 jobs would be lost statewide if food services were contracted out by Health Support Services, an agency of NSW Health. The union claimed Health Sup- port wanted to close hospital kitchens to save money. ‘‘The food will be pre-packaged; it will be brought in on a tray,’’ the union’s Jodie Cowdrey said. ‘‘It will be delivered directly to the patients. There will be no need for kitchen staff because it will all be on recycled stuff so there will be no plates or cutlery. ‘‘That is only the start of it. They will be looking at contracting out the linen services and also the delivery of supply services within the area health service.’’ Health Support Services will take over the running of Sydney South West Area Health’s food services within the next year. A Concord Hospital worker said experience and knowledge would be ‘‘flushed down the toilet’’ if services were contracted out. ‘‘We have kids and mortgages,’’ the staff member, who did not want to be named, said. ‘‘Some people have been here 20 or 30 years and they should be protected as much as possible.’’ A food services worker at Con- cord Hospital said patients would suffer as well as staff. A spokesman for Health Minis- ter John Della Bosca said no decision had been made on the future of hospital food services. ‘‘Any changes will ensure high quality, efficient and effective services for patients,’’ he said. A Health Support Services spokesman said although reviews had taken place, no decisions on outsourcing of any services had been made. ting and crocheting then take part in this session to create wraps for communities in need around the world.
